The Alabama Friends of Cystic Fibrosis is comprised of 3 families with children affected by cystic fibrosis, and University of Alabama at Birmingham researchers that work in this field. The group is dedicated to raising funds and obtaining sponsor-ships through its annual Blow Away 5k race. Our next race will be held on November, 2018. in the Trussville Mall.
What is cystic fibrosis (CF)? Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects 30,000 individuals in the US (70,000 worldwide). A defective gene and its defective protein product cause the body to produce abnormally thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections; and also obstructs the pancreas preventing pancreatic enzymes to break down food.
In the 1950's, only a few children with CF lived to attend elementary school. With the advances in research and medical treatments, cystic fibrosis patients now live well into their 30s. In 2012, the first drug, Kalydeco (ivacaftor) that treats the genetic cause behind CF was discovered. However, Kalydeco only works in 4-5% of CF individuals, and there is still no definite treatment for most patients. With your participation in our annual Blow Away 5k race, we can support live-saving research and help find the cure for all cystic fibrosis patients!
